Anant Chaturdashi is followed by Pitru Paksh / Mahalaya Paksh ....commonly know as SHRADDHAM.or SHRADDH.PAKSH which is generally observed for 14 days in the month of Ashwin as per North Indian calendar . In olden days Shraddh was called as KANAAD( KANYA + AAGAD ) as the Sun enters Kanya or Virgo Rashi when Pitru Paksh starts. During this period Sun is very close to Earth .

Every Hindu should perform Sharaddh of their ancestors.....According to the Vedic Scriptures after death, the soul either gets Salvation ( Moksh ) or gets new birth according to his Karma or his soul wonders as ghost or as unsatisfied aatma troubling his or her beloved ones. As per the scriptures , food ...clothes & money given during Pitru Paksh to Brahmin in the name of our ancestors who are no longer with us is accepted by them( Purvaj ) where ever they are......this is because when the Brahmin eats the food which we offer to him in the name of our dead ancestors ...the heat ( fire ) in the stomach of Brahmin digests the food..... As we all know that fire is element of Sun & therefore the Sun gets the food & eventually our ancestor gets his or her meal where ever they are & in which ever gati they are.

It is believed that when we offer food ,clothes & money during Pitru Paksh to Brahmin for our Purvaj who have got Moksh than the food ...clothes & money which we offered to them comes back to us as their blessings in the form of prosperity happiness.....offspring.....success .....fame etc......However it is important to note that the vice- versa is also true.....& it if the ancestor is an unsatisfied soul than not performing his or her Shraddh brings several troubles in life.....Therefore it must to perform Shraddh.

Shraddh must be performed carefully as slight mistake due to ignorance can make the Pitru unhappy . It is important to note that no vegetable or spice with strong or pungent smell should be used in the preparation of Shraadh ka Bhojan . Mustard & Asafoetida(DEVIL'S DUNG ) commonly known as Hing should not be added in the Pitru food . Oil , Garlic , Onion , Bottle Gourd ( Lauki / Dudhi) are some of the vegetables which are tabooed ( Varjit ) for Pitru Bhojan.Apart from this Leavened Bread ( Pav ) , Biscuits or bakery products are not used . However use of Black Gram ( Urad Dal ) is must in Pitru Food . It can be used in Kajori ...or as Imarti or as Dal ......

There are also other minor few things need to be followed during the day of Shraddh of our dead ancestors . Males should not shave until the Brahmin has eaten food & left for the day , Cow , Crow & Dog should be fed ...., daughter/ daughters who are married should be invited with her husband for the Bhojan on that day , the Brahmin should be sent contented & must be given money along with clothes . Until the Brahmin has left the house no clothes to be washed & no toilets to be cleaned as it is believed that water which is used for cleaning & washing goes to the Ancestors & they get annoyed . Also the mother or the wife or any other person who is elder to the person whose Sharradh is being performed should not eat that food.

According to me Shraddh is a very important Hindu ritual which should be performed by every Hindu without fail every year for the peace of soul of our ancestors , also for the well being of our offspring .....& last but not least when we die we too get food offered to us by our descendents .

SNAKE WINE

Snake wine or Vietnamese wine available in Southeast Asia & Southern China, is considered as a medicine since it is believed that it makes man stronger. The origin of snake wine is Vietnam.

There are two varieties of snake wine:

• Steeped: A large venomous snake can be placed into a glass jar of rice wine, often with many smaller snakes, turtles, insects, or birds, and left to steep for many months. However, the snake venom is denatured by the ethanol (its proteins are unfolded and therefore inactivated) .The wine is drunk as a restorative in small shots or cups.

• Mixed: Body fluids of snake are mixed into wine and consumed immediately in the form of a shot. In the restaurants and bars of various lethal snakes are kept on show in cages for the customers to choose from. Once picked it usually takes two men to kill the angry reptile, one to hold it upright and the other to slice it open from head to tail. The blood is then poured into a vat to be mixed with rice wine. Not much goes to waste as the heart is cut out and the gall bladder is emptied and mixed with wine in shot glasses. After the drinking is done the snake is fried and served up over several hours.

RABINDRANATH TAGORE -AN IMMORTAL WRITER

Rabindranath Tagore wrote almost hundred short stories .He was the first Bengali who took short stories to serious art form.Rabindranath wrote most of his stories in 1890s.These stories were published in several periodicals.A popular periodical is SADHANA in which 36 stories were published among which are the famous stories like KABULIWALA & HUNGRY STONE.

Tapan Sinha made three movies on Rabindranath Tagore's Stories.He made movie on Kabuliwala , Hungry Stone & Atithi. Kabuliwala was shown in 1957 Berlin Film Festival.Rabindranath Tagore was ideal of Tapan Sinha.Rabindranath Tagore's another periodical is SABUJ PATRA in which stories like WIFE'S LETTER & WOMEN UNKNOWN ( Aprichitta ) were published.

For years Rabindranath Tagore was not recognized as great writer because Non-Bengali readers had to depend upon the translated version of his Bengali stories which were of poor Quality.Later with the help of some Britishers he managed to improve his translations.

Shani is of the 9 planets. According to Hindu mythology Shani (Saturn) is son of Sun & Chaaya . It is believed that Shani & Sun (Surya Devta) are bitter enemies although they are close relatives. Therefore Shani mantra jaap is done when Sun sets .Yamraj (the lord of death), Dharamraj & Yamuna River are brothers & sister of Shani Maharaj. 1)CHANTING MANTRA : “ Om Shum Shanishchraay Namah :for at least 108 timeswith Sandal wood beads mala but remember not to chant the mantra with Tulsi beads mala . The mantra should be chanted after Sun set. The person should take a bath & should wear black clothes. Also offer Gur ( jaggery ) & Kali Urad dalkhichadi (Black Gram) to Shani Maharaj. After the pooja distribute the Prasad among the family members.

HERE ARE TWO MYTHOLOGICAL STORIES ABOUT THE ORIGIN OF KAAL BHAIRAV .

1) The origin of Bhairava can be traced to the conversation between Lord Brahma and Lord Vishnu recounted in "Shiv Maha-Purana" where Lord Vishnu asks Lord Brahma who is the supreme creator of the Universe. Arrogantly, Brahma tells Vishnu to worship him because he (Brahma) is the supreme creator. This angered Shiva who in reality is the creator of all. Shiva then incarnated in the form of Bhairava to punish Brahma. Bhairava beheaded one of Brahma's five heads and since then Brahma has only four heads. When depicted as Kala Bhairava, Bhairava is shown carrying the amputated head of Brahma .

2) Another story of the origin of Bhairava is the tale of Sati , wife of Shiva. Sati, the daughter of the king of gods, Daksha had chosen to marry Shiva. Her father disapproved the alliance because he perceived Shiva as an asetic associated with animals and ghosts and a frugal lifestyle. Eventually, Daksha held a yagna (a ritualistic sacrifice) and invited all the Gods , but not Sati and Shiva. Sati came to the yagna alone, where Daksha publicly spoke in a belittling manner about Shiva. Sati could not bear to hear her husband insulted and offered herself to the sacrificial pyre.

When Shiva learned of this, he destroyed the yagna and killed Daksha by beheading him. Shiva carried Sati's corpse on his shoulders and ran uncontrollably all around the world for days. Since this would eventually destroy all creation, Vishnu used his Sudarshan Chakra (divine discus) to cut Sati's body into pieces, which then fell all around. These spots where Sati's body parts fell are now known as SHAKTI PEETHS . In the form of the frightful Bhairava, Shiva is said to be guarding each of these Shaktipeeths. Each Shaktipeeth temple is accompanied by a temple dedicated to Bhairava.

LV MIGHT CAUSE STILLBIRTH

According to a research study published in the Journal Birth Defect Research Part -B Volume 77 , Page NO. 251-256 , 2006 the Virus Ljungan ( LV )might be responsible for large number of Stillbirths. Stillbirth is the death of a baby after the 20th week of pregnancy but before delivery.

Ljungan Virus is named by Virologist Bo Niklasson of Uppsala University in 1999 who discovered it in the Swedish river valley.LV is found in different species of native animals of Europe & United States.

In a laboratory study, researchers found that 86 % of pregnant laboratory mice infected with Ljungan virus delivered dead babies( mice ).This made the researchers to study further for the possible correlation between Ljungan & Stillbirths among humans.

In a new study researchers examined Stillbirths & placental tissue from humans. They found LV in 4 out of 10 stillborns that they autopsied & 5 out of 10 placental tissues .The researchers did not find the virus in the placental tissue from Normal pregnancies.The researchers suspect that LV might also cause Preeclampsia.

The researchers consider these finding as very powerful clues for stillbirths among humans & are engaged in further investigation.

According to a study conducted on Australia patients with ' End Stage Renal Disease ' ( ESRD) can improve their plight & thereby quality of life by participating in weight lifting exercises during dialysis.

The cause of mortality among patients with ESRD is not only malfunctioning of Kidneys but also wasting of muscles( weakening of muscles).Weight lifting increases muscles & improves strength of the patient & thereby improves the quality of life.

The study was conducted on 49 patients.The patients were asked to lay on their back while performing the exercises.Each session included two sets of eight repetitions of ten exercises ,using free weight dumbbells for the upper body & weighted ankle cuffs for the lower body.

After 12 weeks CT scans showed that the weight training group had significantly
improves the muscle quality also their body weight & body strength was increased.

Care of cooking oil is very important since the way we use oil affects our health .

SELECTION OF COOKING OIL : One should buy & consume omega-3 fatty acid rich oils like Soyabean , Mustard seed oils. Sunflower & Rice bran oils are also good.

STORAGE OF OILS : Keep oil in air-tight container. The container should be clean & free from any smell. Also keep oil away from direct sun light. These precautions regarding the storage of oil should be taken in order to increase the shelf life of oils. Oils contain Poly unsaturated fatty -acids which get oxidized in the presence of air & sun light.Once the Poly-unsaturated fatty acids get oxidized the oil develops off flavors ie. is it becomes Rancid. Rancid oils should not be consumed if it is consumed it causes headache , Nausea etc.

USE OF OILS : Never over heat an oil . Oils should always be heated below ( Smoke point). Smoke point is a temperature at which the oil starts smoking. Always buy oils with high smoking point.The smoking point of an oil reduces by repeated use of oil & by not staining the oil after cooking food in it. Discard oils which have become dark brown in color due to repeated use .If such oil is used it catches fire ( Fire point ). Also consumption of foods cooked in such oils causes stomach pain , vomiting, headache etc. Always cool & strain the oil before refilling it into bottle. Last but not least if a very strong flavored food is cooked in oil , freshen the oil by frying some potatoes.

Mulla Nasrudeen is a very famous folkloric character.Thousands of sarcastic stories , anecdotes & jokes about Mulla Nasrudin are still enjoyed.Since stories about him are popular in many countries , people from different countries claim that Mulla Nasrudin is native of their country but he was born in a Turkish village in 1208 & died around 1284.

Every year, an International Nasreddin Hoja Festival is held between July 5-10 in the town where he was buried in Turkey, giving writers & artists a chance to present their works of drama, music, paintings, films and animation and keep the memory of Nasreddin alive.Mulla Nasrudin used to travel from his home town to distant places & used to make friends through his foolish but witty remarks . Very little is known about his family but in some stories it is written he has many wives & children who used to fight among themselves.

There are many variations of the Nasrudeen stories as they have been handed down orally over the generations. Differences have naturally sprung up due to the vast geographical regions where his stories form part of the oral culture. One day, Mulla and his son went on a journey. Mulla let his son ride the donkey while he walked. Along the way, they passed some people who said, " Look at that healthy young boy on the donkey “The boy then let his father ride while he walked. Mulla rode and the boy walked by his side. Soon they met another group. " Look at that! Poor little boy has to walk while his father rides the donkey” . This time, Mulla climbed onto the donkey behind his son. Soon they met another group, who said, " Look at that poor donkey! He has to carry the weight of two people " . Mulla then told his son, " The best thing is for us to walk and lead the donkey. Then no one can complain ” So, they continued their journey on foot. Again, they met some others who said: “Just take a look at those fools. The water pipes burst in winter because of ANOMALOUS BEHAVIOR OF WATER .Generally liquids expand on heating & contracts on cooling.Water however shows an exceptional behavior below 4 degree C. If we cool water at room temperature we find that it goes on contracting but as the temperature falls below 4 degree C it begins to expand instead of contracting, conversely if water is heated from 0 degree centigrade to 4 degree C instead of expanding it contracts.

The anomalous behavior of water plays an important role in the survival of aquatic animals & plants in cold countries.During winter season as the temperature decreases water at the surface of lakes, rivers, sea etc start contracting . As the water contracts it's density increases & it sinks to the bottom.This process continues until the temperature of all the water in a lake or river falls to 4 degree C .Thereafter as the water at the surface cools below 4 degree C it expands instead of contracting & consequently it's density decreases , as a result it remains on the surface of lake or river.The temperature of water in the surface goes on decreasing to 0 degree C & finally is converted into ice, while the water below the ice continues to remain at 4 degree C. NAARAD MUNI

Even if our eyes are closed but still we will recoginze Naarad Muni as soon we hear on TV ' NAARAYAN .....NAARAYAN ' . All of us know that Naarad Muni visits all the lokhs & communicate messages but how many of us know about the birth of Naarad Muni . In this post I will be writing about Naarad Muni's past.

According to Bhaagvat , Naarad Muni was Born as Sooth Putra before he was born as Naarad Muni. As Sooth putra his mother was a widow , she used to clean roads etc & he used to help his mother in doing the work.Once a group of saints came in their village. Naarad muni's ( sooth putra) mother told him to go & help the saints in cleaning & other things. As an obedient son, Sooth putra went and started doing things for the saints .He use to clean their vessels , floors & used to make beds of saints in night.

One day after seeing his dedication & sincerity towards work , One saint asked sooth putra ( Naarad Muni ) to eat some left over food of Priests. Sooth putra happily ate the left over food .As soon as he ate the food his attitude towards world completely changed . Now he was no longer interested in worldly desires.When the Saints started leaving the village Sooth putra insisted the saints to take him along with them but as his mother started crying the priests refused to take him along with them . In fact the priests suggested Sooth putra to remain with her mother & serve her.

Sooth putra obeyed what saints told him to do but still he was not interested in worldly desires, when he grew up her mother pleaded him to get married however he refused to marry.One day when his mother went in Jungle to gather wood , she died because of Snake bite. After his mother's death Sooth putra traveled throughout the world preaching people about God & his greatness .After he died he born again as Naarad Muni.

BHANMATI

History is evident that India is a land of devoted wives .Among them is Bhanmati. Bhanmati was wife of Vachaspati Mishra of South.Vachaspati Mishra has written several Shivji Tikaas.He was a devoted follower of Lord Shiva & was 24 hours busy in writing scriptures on Shivji .His wife Banmati was very devoted to her husband,She never used to disturb her husband while he was writing scriptures.She used to fill the lamp with oil & never let the lamp to extinguish so that her husband does not get disturbed.

Vachaspati Mishra wrote several Shivji Tikaa's . One day when he was completing a scripture on Shivji the lamp suddenly started flickering , as soon as Bhanmati saw this she immediately prevented the flame to get extinguish.Suddenly Vachaspati Mishr saw Bhanmati in the light of lamp and asked her " Who are you & what are you doing ".Bhanmati smilingly told that " Swami I am your wife & we got married 36 years ago ". Vachaspati Mishra asked her wife than why I did not realize that ? .Bhanmati said ," As he was busy writing Scriptures on Shivji & she does not want to interfere with his work therefore she never made him realize that he was married."

On hearing this from her wife Vachaspati Mishra appreciated her & told her that the name of the Scripture which he is writing will be BHANMATI KI TIKAA.

GURU NANAK

Sadguru Nanak was born on 15-4-1469,in Talvandi village now in West Pakistan.His Father's was Mehta Kalu a village accountant.Guru nanak studied in a local school arithmetic , book keeping ,Persian,Arabic.

From childhood Guru nanak was inclined towards God , He did not have interests in worldly pleasures.At the age of 12 he got married to Sulakhni but still ne used to wander with Fakirs.At the age of 25 he became father.He had two sons & two daughters.However one of his daughter expired in infancy.

Guru Nanak was still occupied by spiritual thoughts & Mardana joined him both of them use to sing poems,give food to people & go together in morning to bathe in river.It is said that Nanak had is first mystical experience during of these early morning ablutions.

At the age of 38 Nanak left his home & traveled all over India & even went to Bagdad.He came back to his native land when Barbar invaded Punjab for the third time.When Nanak saw the massacre of people he felt very bad .He than introduced Sikhism which swept Punjab & India within Short time.

Guru Nanak clearly stated that there is only one immortal God & he is the Creator.

STAGES OF HUMAN MEMORY

1) SENSORY REGISTER :
Sensory register is the first stage of memory.The stage lasts for 10 seconds.As soon as we hear or see things, the information remains in our brain for just 10 seconds which is relatively very short time after which the information fades out from our memory. However very few details of what we have seen or heard remains & this information is than passed to the next stage which is Short Term Memory .

2) SHORT TERM MEMORY
The information from the sensory register is now processed in the short term memory,the information is rearranged & send to our Long Term Memory which is a relatively permanent memory.When ever we recall any information the information stored Long term memory back to Short term memory.

3) LONG TERM MEMORY :
Long Term Memory is relatively permanent memory. It is basically a store house & when ever we need any stored information it comes & goes to the Short Term Memory.However the information from Long Term Memory gets vanished if it is not used or updated for very long time & as a result when to recall any information after many years or months we are just able to recall the information in bits or pieces.

In spite of discouragement by the Japanese Government , Jikei Hospital in the southern city of Kumamoto adopted the baby drop off system in order to discourage abortions & abandonment of infants in unsafe public places.

There is a small opening on the side of the hospital through which parents can drop their neonate at any time of the day into an incubator .An alarm will notify the hospital staff of the arrival of little angel.The hospital will raise the baby & later will put the child for adoption. According to the Hospital Crane's Cradle or Baby drop off box is the parent's last resort but according to the Japanese Government the Crane's Cradle will simply encourage more abandonments of infants.

In recent past a drop box in Tokyo received only 10 babies in 6 years & it was closed in 1992 after a dead baby was found inside the box. In my opinion the baby drop box system is excellent since the neonate will not going to start his or her life from a garbage box also the infant will not starve .Last but not least the little angel with his innocent smile might brighten the life of those parents who need little angel desperately

Looking at the adjoining photo you will say he is Lex Luther the villain who weakens our favorite Superhero Superman in the movie Superman Returns & in comic books .The wicked uses a mineral Kryptonite which was in the form large green color crystals .

It is interesting to know that Kryptonite which stole Superman's power is no longer a fiction mineral . Recently researchers from mining group Rio Tinto discovered a mineral in a mine in Serbia which is almost similar to Kryptonite with respect to chemical formula which is Sodium-lithium boron silicate hydroxide. However the mineral varies from Kryptonite in color & form .The mysterious mineral is harmless white color powder, it it non radioactive & free from fluorine

Yes, I am not joking Engelbart is father of Mouse.The mouse I am writing about is not an ordinary mouse nor it is like little Stewart .The mouse is friend of man & it has become part & parcel of our lives.Great, you have guessed it right I am writing about our Computer Mouse whose tail remains attached to our PCs.

Douglas C Engelbart 1948 graduate of Oregon University & a Radar Technician for 2years in the Phillippines during World War II has invented the PC Mouse in 1968.He named it as X Y Position Indicator for a Display System .He has also contributed to computer technology with his other inventions also .However PC Mouse is his greatest contribution .In America Engelbart was honored with a huge cash prize for his inventions on 4th September 1997.On the epoch making achievement of Engelbart the Oregon State University ( OSU ) was proud of their old student Douglas Engelbart.

PREDICTIONS IN THE FORM OF FOUR LINE POEMS

Today all over the world people believe in Nostradamus's predictions ,but how many of us know that his predictions are in the form of just 4 line poems ?In other words his prediction about 11th September World Trade Tragedy in USA was in the form of a poem.The Greatest Fortune teller of earth was born in a rich Jewish / Catholic family in St. Remi, France on December 14 th,1503.Nostradamus although known for his forecasts was by profession a Doctor. He received his Medical degree from the Mont Pellier School of Medicine.

During the spread of Black Plague in Europe , other Doctors used to bleed the patients in order to release the germs , however Nostradamus was against this ignorance cum malpractice, he suggested to maintain personal hygiene through washing & bathing .Unfortunately Nostradamus lost his wife & children during the epidemic Black Plague.

At the age of 52 Nostradamus started writing poems which were only of 4 lines.These poems are known as QUATRAINS which are basically forecasts .The complete book of Nostradamus is known as CENTURIES .Centuries means chapters .The book has 10 chapters , each chapter ( Century ) has 100 Quatrains except for Century VII, which has only 42 quatrains.Therefore the total book has 942 Quatrains ( 4 line poems ).

The following is the first Quatrains( poem ) from the first chapter of the book written by Nostradamus: Sitting alone at night in secret study;it is placed on the brass tripod.A slight flame comes out of the emptiness and makes successful that which should not be believed in vain.The poem is in itself a forecast.

Understanding & interpreting these line is beyond the reach of most of us .A person who is able to accurately interpret Nostradamus's words is considered Nostradamus Expert .Till date only some of the quatrains are interpreted completely .
Nostradamus will remain immortal till eternity through his predictions which are in the form of 4 line poems.

MEAT EATER PLANTS

Plants living in wet areas cannot get sufficient nutrients from the soil as a result of which they have adapted to the situation by consuming insects & animals for the nutrients.Pitcher plant , Yellow Trumpet , Sundew , Venus Flytrap & Nepenthes are some of the carnivorous plants.

Charles Darvin referred to such plants as Insectivorous but later scientist found that these plants consume small animals therefore they named them Carnivorous plants.Carnivorous plants uses a variety of mechanics to trap their prey.For instance the Yellow Trumpet has a substance in its nectar that paralyzes any insect that consumes it than the plant swallow the insects & digest it.

The largest meat eating plant is NEPENTHES.It grows in the rain forest of south east Asia. Nepenthes trap mostly insects & small frogs.These carnivorous plants do not harm human beings & so far there is no plant discovered which can eat man. The rumor that there are man eater plants is due to Corpse Flower , which smells of a dead man.
